This is a limited-term appointment for one year (12 months) with the potential to extend for an additional year (24 months total) and/or become permanent.

Under the general direction of the Staff Services Manager II (Supervisory) in the Public Affairs Office’s (PAO’s) Creative Services Branch, the Exhibit Designer/Coordinator is responsible for performing the professional and technical tasks related to exhibit design and planning. The position involves the conceptualization, creative and technical design of interactive exhibits, obtaining contractor estimates, and managing budgets, schedules, installations, maintenance, and repairs. The incumbent will work closely with the Exhibit Section’s Graphic Designer III to develop exhibits, storylines, and interactive materials. This role also oversees contractor production and timelines, and coordinates facility requests. Must work well with others within the department and field divisions to coordinate the multiple components required in developing exhibits within the visitor's centers. The incumbent must be proficient with power tools and fabrication as well as the use of Adobe Creative Suite for visual graphics; MS Office Suite and other appropriate applications, to budget, schedule, write, edit, and produce written exhibit copy and PowerPoint presentations. Travel is required ‘as needed’ on an intermittent basis.

Special Requirements

Must be willing to travel throughout the State and to work irregular hours. Occasional overtime may be required for on-site installations and/or complicated repairs. The incumbent must maintain a valid California Class C driver's license.

The position requires experience in exhibit techniques and production to effectively communicate with the intended audience including the knowledge of fabrication and material processes, audio, video, and interactives, electrical and lighting systems, and printing and finishing processes. The optimal incumbent will have experience in managing schedules and budgets for repairs, design, and installation. Excellent communication skills are a must.

We would like to hear specifically what you accomplished yourself, such as leading a team, developing graphics or technical layouts, fabricating, specifying materials, preparing print ready files, managing contracts or vendors, or integrating lighting and A/V systems.  Please describe your direct contributions and the tools and processes you used, how you coordinated with other teams, met deadlines, how you ensured the final design met intent, safety standards, and visitor experience goals and any obstacles you encountered and how you successfully overcame them.
